Entering a topic here from a Backer, Karl, that was posted on Kickstarter:

I received the meter and am having trouble with flash metering. It works initially, then seems to freeze up and no longer responds to subsequent flashes or ambient light. I’ve tried reinstalling the app with no success. I’m using iPhone 7 and working in a studio so ambient light isn’t causing the issue (my Sekonic 786 has no problems) and have the same problem with speedlights (short duration flash) and pack lights/monolights (longer duration flash). Any thoughts or suggestions?

Both iOS and Android apps will sometimes stop responding to the “Monitor Ambient” or “Flash Metering” controls on the exposure screen. The issue is the app’s UI state gets out of sync with the meter’s current state. This is a known issue and we’re working on an update.

The best solution is to disconnect the meter and reconnect. The app will refresh it’s state from the meter, and it should all work again. Sometimes tapping the “Monitor Ambient” or “Flash Metering” controls helps, by forcing the app to refresh from the meter’s state.

Just received my meter last week. Having similar issues: the ambience metering for exposure and temperature seems to be working nicely. Especially the temperature metering is great, I’ve noticed that I’m getting clearly more accurate white balance measurements compared to camera’s own white balance. However the flash metering is not working, initially I might get one metering but after that the meter doesn’t seem to detect the flash at all or/and freezes totally. I’ve played around the settings, reinstalled the app and paired the meter and the phone (android) several times with no luck. The app seems to reset the settings (for example trying to change the photocell trigger sensitivity) instantly after changing them. Also the flash metering box comes unticked instantly after tapping.

@jarkkom – Yes, there are issues with Flash Metering that we are working to fix. Thanks for giving some details of the issues you found. That always helps with debug.

Any update on this? I have firmware 906, and from what I can tell, flash metering doesn’t work.

I turn on “Flash Metering” in the app, the LEDs on the device change to display a pattern of multiple colors, but the app never updates the exposure information when I fire a flash at it. If I do this enough, the device becomes unresponsive, with the LED pattern continuing until I remove the batteries.

@bhpowell – please try setting the Photocell Trigger Sensitivity in the settings page (“gear” icon, upper right on most screens) to 6 or 7 (defaults to 10). This works well with iPhones. We are still working on improving the Android version.

Thanks; that improved things. While testing, it detected a flash or two, but then returned to not detecting flashes. I think the device had become entirely unresponsive–I removed the batteries, and it started working again.

I don’t trust it yet, but at least it’s kind-of working.

I set the sensitivity to 7 but it didn’t seem to meter flash after that on Android.

By the way, how do I check my meter firmware version?

@Mark Pitsilos – Sensitivity 7 or 8 works with firmware version 906. Use 10 if you have a different version.
Meter firmware version is on the Setting screen, upper left.
      Also, thanks for contacting us.
